A Call to Action
The Association of Refugees with Disability (ARD), in collaboration with partners such as the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP), Disability Rights Fund (DRF), International Rescue Committee (IRC), Refugee-Led Organizations Network (RELON), Humanity & Inclusion (HI), Young African Refugees for Integral Development (YARID), and others, is coming together to commemorate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) under the theme “Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future”. This global event, observed annually on December 3rd, is a cornerstone in raising awareness and advocating for the rights, inclusion, and empowerment of persons with disabilities.
For ARD, this day holds special significance as it underscores the organization’s commitment to advocating for refugees with disabilities, a group that faces compounded challenges due to their intersecting identities. The event will bring together a diverse array of stakeholders—partners, policymakers, community leaders, and persons with disabilities themselves—to champion the cause of inclusion and showcase the resilience and contributions of refugees with disabilities.
Why Celebrate the Day?
“Because it’s our day”
The International Day of Persons with Disabilities serves as a platform to amplify the voices of persons with disabilities and highlight the barriers they face in accessing education, healthcare, employment, and other basic rights. For refugees with disabilities, these barriers are even more daunting, compounded by displacement, limited resources, and systemic exclusion.
This year’s commemoration is particularly timely as it seeks to emphasize collaborative solutions and shared responsibilities in addressing these challenges. By marking this day, ARD and its partners reaffirm their dedication to creating a more inclusive society, not only for persons with disabilities but also for all marginalized communities.
The event will also celebrate the diversity within the disability community, showcasing the strengths and achievements of individuals who, despite immense challenges, have shown resilience and innovation in their daily lives.
What to Expect?
The day will feature a rich program of activities, including:
- Panel Discussions and Advocacy Forums
Experts, policymakers, and community leaders will engage in meaningful conversations about the rights of persons with disabilities, particularly refugees. These discussions aim to influence policy and promote disability-inclusive practices. - Showcase of Skills and Resilience
Refugees with disabilities will share their stories through art and other creative expressions, demonstrating their talents and contributions to society. - Interactive Sessions with Stakeholders
Inclusive workshops will provide an opportunity for participants to learn about disability-friendly technologies, inclusive education practices, and sustainable livelihoods. - Recognition of champions
ARD will recognize resilient refugees with disabilities who have demonstrated leadership and fostered economic independence, as well as members of the organizations that have significantly contributed to enhancing the lives of individuals with disabilities.
A Call to Action
This year’s IDPD celebration is not just an event; it is a movement calling for unity, collaboration, and action. ARD invites everyone—policymakers, NGOs, community leaders, and members of the public—to join in commemorating this important day. By standing together, we can create an inclusive future where persons with disabilities, especially refugees, can thrive.
Let us come together to celebrate diversity, advocate for inclusion, and amplify the voices of refugees with disabilities. Join us as we turn awareness into action and resilience into a roadmap for change. Together, we can ensure that no one is left behind.
